MA director and president meet minister to discuss key museum issues
Museums Association director Mark Taylor and president Stuart Davies this morning met culture minister Ed Vaizey to make the case for the future of museums in England.
Topics they discussed included Renaissance, the reallocation of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council’s role and programmes, help and support for medium and small museums, the role of national museums and how they will deal with cuts, and how museums can use collections more effectively.
“The MA pressed for any new arrangements to recognise the size and importance of the museum sector, including Renaissance, accreditation, designation, the government indemnity scheme, and the different ways we can make sure of retaining those,” said Taylor.
“We expressed grave concern at the scale of the cuts to come and in particular cuts in local government funding, and warned that they could set museums back a decade.”
Vaizey will be making the keynote speech at the Museums Association Conference and Exhibition 2010 in Manchester on Monday 4 October, at which he will be laying out his major policy plans for museums.

We described Ed Vaizey as culture secretary. His correct title is culture minister.
