MA to respond to Lottery funding consultation
Geraldine Kendall, 02.08.2010
DCMS is proposing to boost Lottery shares for heritage to 20 per cent by 2012
The MA is preparing a response to the Government’s proposed changes to the allocation of Lottery funding.
Following an increase in lottery ticket sales, DCMS is planning to restore Lottery shares for heritage back to 20 per cent – up from the existing allocation of 16.66 per cent. The change will amount to an additional £50m a year for the heritage sector.
DCMS is carrying out a consultation on these proposals and has invited the MA to share its views on how the changes are likely to affect the heritage sector.
The consultation is particularly seeking feedback on how the changes would benefit the sector and impact on the delivery of previously identified priorities or projects.
Caitlin Griffiths, the MA’s head of workforce development and events, said: “In the last 15 years funding from the Heritage Lottery has helped transform many museums and galleries across the UK.
“The money has helped to create new and exciting places for the public to see the UK’s fantastic collections, funded innovative projects to develop new audiences and increased the public’s enjoyment and understanding of all types of heritage.
“Museums have really felt the reduction in lottery funding over the last few years as resources have been diverted to the Olympics so the possibility of more money coming to museums and galleries is very welcome. This is especially true in the current economic climate where museums and galleries are under considerable financial pressure.”
The MA will be submitting a response to the DCMS consultation later this month; if any members would like to contribute their views to this response they can do so until 9 August.
