MA launches confidential cuts survey

Rebecca Atkinson, 01.06.2011
Results will show the impact of cuts on museums in the UK
The Museums Association (MA) has launched a confidential online survey to assess how funding cuts are affecting the museum sector across the UK.

The results of the survey will enable the MA to gain a fuller understanding of industry-wide conditions in the wake of funding cuts, and to convey this to the wider public.

Gina Evans, collections project assistant at the MA, said: "We want to assess the impact of the current financial climate and highlight the areas that have been most affected in order to advocate on behalf of the sector.

"To do this we need as accurate a picture as possible so I would urge people to fill in the survey and let us know what the impact of cuts and tigher budgets have been on their museum."

Respondents are asked to compare the current situation within their museum to that of April 2010. The survey takes, on average, 10 minutes and all responses will remain anonymous.

The cuts are not only curtailing direct operations, services and opening hours of museums they are also dealing a deep and long lasting blow to the specialist supply chain. It is important to recognise that exhibitions draw together the talents of designers, writers, animators, model makers, illustrators, programmers, actors and a host of other suppliers.
In turn these commissions from the creatiive sector are often used to sustain an independant fine art practice - do not underestimate the fall-out from the cuts they extend way beyond the confines of the museum walls.

I've been aware of the fact that the true picture of cuts to the museum sector has been hidden from the public for some time. My Save Our Museums (UK) facebook and twitter page is currently posting on average a new story of sites at risk, daily.

The public seem very aware of the threats to libraries but due to the fact that museums at risk usually receive no more than local media coverage.the true picture remains hidden from the general public.
