MGS awards artist grants to three museums

Projects include object installations among fishing community
Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) has announced funding for three museums to carry out creative collaborations with artists around their collections and the history of their local communities.

The Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther, Timespan Museum and Arts Centre in Helmsdale and the Gairloch Heritage Museum have received a total of £26,267 from the Iconic Artists in Iconic Places project, run by MGS and Creative Scotland.

The funding will see the Scottish Fisheries Museum temporarily re-site objects from its collection to nearby houses and streets that have historical links with the men and women of the fishing industry.

Documentary photographer Sean Dooley and filmmaker Tim Fitzpatrick will use the museum’s photographic collection to create connections between past and present day inhabitants.

Timespan is programming a series of events marking the 200th anniversary of the Kildonan Clearances, with Canadian-Scottish artist Anthony Schrag commissioned to explore the emotive themes associated with the preceding riots.

Finally, Gairloch Heritage Museum is using the grant to host its first artist-in-residence.

Simon Hayhow, director of the Scottish Fisheries Museum, said: “Everyone is excited at the chance to invite local people in to discover and research our collections, and to curate a display in their own homes with a giant illuminated image in the window.

"On a dark, cold winter night they can welcome visitors to explore this illuminated trail in a string of unique exhibition experiences through the historic streets of Anstruther and Cellardyke, with a few surprises along the way.”

Iconic Artists in Iconic Places aims to enable artists to cast a new perspective on museum collections, historic sites and Scotland’s intangible cultural heritage.

Joanne Orr, chief executive officer of MGS, said: “Scotland’s museum collections offer authentic and emotive sources of inspiration for so many. By enabling these collaborations between artists and museums, Iconic Artists in Iconic Places funding is forging real connections between communities, museums and their collections across the country.”

The funding amounts awarded are: Gairloch Heritage Museum (£9,450); the Scottish Fisheries Museum (£10,967); and Timespan (£5,850).
