HLF launches Heritage Endowments programme
Match funding to help organisations develop sustainable revenue
A programme to help heritage organisations across the UK create and develop endowment funds to support their long-term income has been launched this week by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The Heritage Endowments fund will offer grants of £250,000, £500,000 or £1m to enable organisations to create financial reserves “that can be drawn on and invested to create a regular source of annual income”.
Successful applicants must raise funding from private donations to match the amount provided by the HLF; the grant will be only released when the applicant can demonstrate evidence of match funding.
The grants are available to organisations that the HLF is currently funding or has funded in the past. Groups of heritage organisations may also form a partnership to apply.
A statement by the HLF said: “Fundraising for an endowment will enable organisations to increase fundraising expertise among staff, volunteers and trustees and to develop relationships with donors as well as to attract additional private money into the heritage sector.
“Heritage Endowments aims to help heritage organisations diversify their income and achieve a significant growth in endowments in the heritage sector, providing sustainable long-term funding.”
To apply, organisations must register online and send a project enquiry form to the HLF by 13 October 2016.
Earlier this month, the HLF also unveiled a £15m scheme in partnership with Arts Council England (ACE) to help “put arts, culture and heritage at the heart of successful communities”.
The Great Place Scheme will initially be piloted in 12 locations across England, with the HLF and ACE providing £7.5m each. It will offer grants of between £500,000 and £1.5m to find new ways in which cultural, community and civic organisations can work more closely together.
Fulfilling one of the key goals outlined in the Westminster government’s recent culture white paper, the scheme will fund activities such as finding new ways to include arts, culture and heritage in local education and health services; researching the contribution of arts, culture and heritage to local economies; and encouraging the use of existing powers that enable communities to support their local culture.
The HLF’s chairman Peter Luff said: “An area's culture - including arts and heritage - is important not just for its own sake; this scheme will show how it can also boost jobs and local economies, improve education and life chances and promote community cohesion and wellbeing.”
The fund is open to partnerships rather than individual organisations, and expressions of interest must be submitted by 6 October 2016.
Meanwhile the HLF has also announced the projects set to benefit from its latest round of £55m funding.
Successful applicants include Royal Museums Greenwich, which was awarded £4.7m towards the new Endeavour Galleries at the National Maritime Museum and £7.4m to save the Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I for the public. Plymouth City Council won £14.8m towards the creation of a new Plymouth History Centre, expected to open in spring 2020.
