Museums urged to contribute to review of cultural education
The Museums Association (MA) has urged museums to submit examples of their successful work with schools and young people to a review of cultural education.

Darren Henley, the managing director of Classic FM, launched the consultation with an open invitation to organisations, teachers, parents and children. Following the February publication of his report into music education, Henley was asked by the culture minister Ed Vaizey to lead on a review of cultural education.

At the launch of the review, Vaizey said that all young people should have opportunities to take part in performance and visual arts, and learn about the UK’s cultural, architectural and film heritage, both in and out of school.

As a vital part of the review, Henley is expected to formulate a definition of what a solid cultural education should comprise. He will also address how to ensure that children from all backgrounds have access to such cultural opportunities.

Henley said: “Providing children with an excellent cultural education provides them with knowledge and skills that stay with them for the rest of their lives. I hope to provide ministers with a report that shows how we can build on current successes in this area to develop a cultural education system which rivals that of other countries around the world."

Maurice Davies, head of policy and communication at the MA, said: "Museum visits bring proven benefits to school children and we very much look forward to proposals that will enhance them and make museums available to even more young people inside and out of school."

The deadline for submissions is 20 May and the recommendations from the report are expected in autumn.

Anybody interested in contributing to the review can respond to the call for evidence at www.surveymonkey.com/s/culturaleducation.
