The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is seeking feedback from the sector for its state of the nation review of the museum sector in England.

The Museums Review, first unveiled in this year’s Culture White Paper, will look at a number of areas, including diversifying participation, developing communities, supporting soft power and creating a resilient museums sector.

The aim is to create a state of the nation report on England’s museums increasing understanding around how the sector operates, the challenges it faces and how it can best supported by government.

The review will map accredited museums and galleries in England according to governance model, collection and visitor numbers. It will also examine: museum operating models and changes to revenue streams, including direct and indirect funding from government, Arts Council England (ACE), the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), philanthropy, sponsorship, trust, and commercial enterprise.

Others areas of focus are: measuring the success and monitoring the impact of the sector; and identifying challenges and opportunities associated with increasing access, partnership working, shared services, digital projects, collections, workforce skills, diversity and leadership and international activities.

The Museums Association, National Trust, English Heritage, ACE, the HLF and the Local Government Association are among the bodies that will contribute to the review.

There are more than 1,300 Accredited museums and galleries in England, of which 89 hold Designated collections. The review will cover both regional and national museums and its consultation period will close on 31 October. It is likely that the final report will be published next summer.
