Future of role unclear following merger
Tony Hill is to step down as director of Manchester's Museum of Science & Industry (Mosi) following confirmation of its merger with the National Museum of Science & Industry (NMSI).
A spokeswoman for NMSI said it had not reached a decision whether to appoint a new director or create a different role but aims to make an announcement later this month.
NMSI includes the Science Museum in London, York’s National Railway Museum and the National Media Museum in Bradford.
In December, NMSI scrapped the director role at the National Media Museum as part of a senior management reorganisation. Instead, a new position – head of the National Media Museum – will be created, reporting to the deputy director of the Science Museum in London.
The merger between Mosi and NMSI was announced in November 2011. Mosi is one of eight non-national museums that the department for culture wants to find alternative sponsors for.
Hill joined Mosi in 2005 and has been in the director role since 2010. In a statement, he said: “I have loved working at Mosi with the fantastic team and ensuring that visitors enjoy their visit to one of Manchester’s greatest cultural spaces.
"However, I now believe the time is right to move on. I look forward to witnessing the museum’s continued success in the future within the NMSI family of museums.”
