Catalyst funds 36 arts institutions
Museums and galleries receive up to £5m in match-funding
The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and Windermere Steam Boat Museum are two of the 36 arts and heritage organisations set to benefit from the £56m Catalyst endowments scheme.
The successful applications to the match-funding scheme will receive grants of between £500,000 and £5m to attract money from private philanthropic sources.
Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to get a significant number of organisations on the road to long-lasting and sustainable endowments that will continue to support their work for years to come.”
Michael McGregor, director of the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere, said the money was a welcome boost in difficult financial times. “We hope we can turn it into a significant endowment for the trust,” he added.
The Catalyst endowments scheme is run jointly by Arts Council England (ACE), the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The HLF awarded a total of £27.5m, including to the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London; the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, County Durham; Pallant House Gallery in Chichester; and Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust in Bristol.
It also allocated £1m each to the Linen Hall Library in Belfast and the Abbotsford Trust in Melrose.
ACE-funded bodies received a total of £30.5m through the scheme, although only four of the 18 recipients were museums or galleries. They included the Turner Contemporary in Margate and the Whitechapel Gallery in London.
HLF chairwoman Jenny Abramsky said the scheme would boost private giving across the heritage sector.
“Alongside our plans to build the fundraising capacity of smaller groups, we expect the programme to form part of a shift in approach to philanthropic giving that will help build financial resilience and attract new money to heritage groups of every size.”
