Exhibition Road revamp

The revamped Exhibition Road in west London, home to the Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and Science Museum, was officially unveiled last month. A chequered granite design runs from South Kensington station to Hyde Park along the full width of the part-pedestrianised road, while new lighting has been installed.

Navy museum partner

The National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has announced that Lockheed Martin has become a corporate partner. Museum director Dominic Tweddle said it would use the defence firm’s support to extend its education programme to include science and technology.

Scottish funding unveiled

The Scottish government has announced Barnett consequential allocations (due to changes in a devolved administration’s assigned budget) of more than £1.1m for 2011 to 2012, including £300,000 to National Galleries of Scotland for maintenance and the improvement of facilities. National Museums Scotland also received £300,000 for estate maintenance from the existing 2011-12 capital budget.

Coins theft at St Albans

About 30 silver Saxon coins dating from the ninth century and a seventh-century hand pin have been stolen from the Museum of St Albans in Hertfordshire. The coins, which were taken from a locked display cabinet, were part of a hoard excavated at St Albans Abbey in 1969. They reportedly have an insurance value of £12,000.
