Killerton Estate, Exeter
Helen Trebble, 16.01.2012
The National Trust estate Killerton, in Broadclyst near Exeter, opened a new restaurant in March 2011.
The Killerton Kitchen restaurant, formerly known as the Garden Tea Room, underwent a complete transformation following a month of renovation.
Absolute Design from Falmouth, the award-winning interior designers behind flagship destination restaurants including Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall at Watergate Bay, used contemporary design inspired by the historical features of the Killerton estate to makeover the tired tea rooms in the 18th-century mansion.
The Killerton Kitchen’s daily menus are shaped by what's available on the farming estate and reflect a sustainable approach to serving visitors excellent food. Head chef Gelf Alderson scours the West Country for the best local ingredients for his dishes, also incorporating fresh kitchen garden herbs.
Customers enjoy food experiences ranging from afternoon tea and home-cooked Sunday lunches to fine dining and candlelit dinners in a destination restaurant within walking distance of the land where their food is grown, reared, milled, pressed or stalked.
The restaurant seats 50-plus and is available for private function hire including wedding receptions. Its "dine out for £10" supper offers are fully booked months ahead.
Last year the Killerton estate won many local food awards including gold and two silvers in the Taste of the West awards; five National Trust Fine Farm Produce awards; a gold in the Devon Tourism awards; and a Food for Life Catering Mark for its commitment to ethical food sourcing and supporting local food producers.
