Claire Everitt
National Portrait Gallery
Claire Everitt spent three years as an exhibitions assistant at the National Portrait Gallery before being promoted to the exhibitions manager.
As the exhibitions assistant Claire's job was to help with all the gallery's temporary shows. This meant taking on much of the general administration, such as ensuring shows were covered by the gallery's indemnity insurance, ordering images for exhibition catalogues and preparing packs for touring shows.
Now, as the exhibitions manager, Claire deals with designers and venues and is more involved in meetings with curators and sponsors. 'Exhibitions is not curatorial work,' she says. 'Before I joined I thought it would be slightly more so. But I'm an organiser.'
Claire, 26, finished her MA in museum studies at UCL in 1998, and found herself competing with 59 fellow graduates for jobs. She volunteered for a year at various museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum. She also took a six-week contract at the Gilbert Collection before securing a permanent position at the National Portrait Gallery.
