Case study: documentation officer
Karen Selby
Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery

Karen Selby, the documentation officer at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery is currently creating a digital record of the museum's photos for its picture archive. There are thousands of photos and it is a massive job.

'Last year I created a similar record of the Norman Cross collection [of artefacts made by prisoners from the Napoleonic wars]. There were 800 objects involved and it took a year,' says Karen, 28. 'I also help out with temporary exhibitions. I do some of the research, find the objects, help with the graphics and some of the complementary displays and write press releases.

'Documentation isn't my permanent career choice, but it has been a great chance to learn about collections management and it will look good on my CV.

'I would like to move to a curatorial position with a bit more management responsibility.'

Karen's first degree was in history of art and architecture, which she says had a big impact on her decision to work in museums and galleries. She also has masters in gallery studies from Essex University.

She moved to Peterborough after a spell as an exhibitions co-ordinator and researcher at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery.
