Case study: registrar
Debbie Richards
Leicestershire Heritage Services

As the registrar of Leicestershire Heritage Services, Debbie Richards is responsible for all information relating to the objects, whether they are part of the permanent collection or loans in and out of the county's museums.

'It could be information about what the object is and where it's come from, or it could be movement records. So if something is on loan or has moved within the museum service, I'm supposed to know where it is,' says Debbie.

'I am intimately involved with things such as documentation procedures and collections management policies. And unlike some registrars I'm responsible for the information management system.'

Monthly collection audits are a big part of the job. 'These are physical checks that the objects are where they should be and that the collection care is being respected,' Debbie says. 'Each day is very different and I like the fact that I work with colleagues across the museum service. It's very rewarding to see the full breadth of the collection.

'The challenge is keeping up to date professionally, maintaining my network and sharing best practice with colleagues.

As well as a history degree, Debbie, 37, has a post-graduate diploma in heritage management from Ironbridge Institute and a masters in museum studies from Leicester University. She is also an associate of the Museums Association and is working towards fellowship of the MA.
