Case study: visitor services assistant
|
Joanne Holloway
Roman Baths and Pump Room
Joanne Holloway trained as an archaeologist before joining the Roman Baths and Pump Room in Bath as a visitor services assistant. After a year she was promoted to the new post of visitor services supervisor. With three other supervisors, Joanne manages 50 staff in the peak season.
'We make sure that the front of house runs smoothly and that everyone is in the right place at the right time, whether they are welcoming visitors, conducting tours or working on the tills,' says Joanne, 25.
'I start the day by looking at what's going on and making any necessary changes to the rota. And at 8.30am we brief the staff. We tell them what's happening, how it's going to work and talk through anything else going on in the building.
'At 9.00am we open for business. If we are short on staff then I might have to cover on occasions - for example taking a school session or working on the tills.'
It is shift work, so Joanne's working day can be begin as early as 7.30am if there is a lot going on and end as late as 10.00pm in the summer.
