Case study: conservator
Sam Sportun
National Museums Liverpool

Sam Sportun has been a sculpture conservator for National Museums Liverpool for the past seven years and describes the job as 'a good mix of science and art'.

'You've really got to know about the context of an object - what it's made from, how long it's been in its environment, the aesthetics of the object,' she says.

Sam, 35, did voluntary work in museums for three years to get some practical experience. She also has a first degree in fine art from Staffordshire University and a masters in historic and archaeological artefacts conservation from Durham University. She is one of four permanent staff in her team. The work includes getting objects ready for display in the galleries, for photographing or for going out on loan.

Students regularly work in the department, and Sam often has to supervise them. The team also contracts work for other organisations, for example they might provide a specification for cleaning a public monument.

Sam's working day is usually 8:30am-5:00pm, but it can be longer if she's on site or finishing a particular museum project. 'As museum conservators we sometimes travel with objects, which can mean up to a week away from work at times.'
