Museum jobs: documentation officer
|
Keeping accurate information about the objects in their care - their function and provenance - is a basic function of all museums, and the job of documentation officers. You could be inputting data about new acquisitions, researching images for catalogues or developing on-line guides. Good IT and multimedia skills are a must.
It sounds a bit dull but documentation provides a good basic training in the fundamentals of managing objects. As such it is often seen as a positive move for people looking for a more mainstream curatorial and collection management job. In smaller museums you could well find yourself being involved with a far wider range of activities. These might include jobs such as research and organising exhibitions.
An independent museum recently advertised for a keeper of documentation to develop and maintain its documentation systems. He or she would also be responsible for the museum's archives and images. The salary offered was £14,000.
