Museums face an ever-widening gap between the care and preservation of collections and the increasing demands for public access and improved interpretation. This programme addresses these challenges, offering insights into modern methods of collection care, interpretation and museum management. The programme has a strong basis in 20th century collections: understanding their value, care and interpretation provides a focus as well as a unique context for the programme. Students study current issues in museum management, modern interpretative methods including new technologies and virtual museums, the care of collections, project management and team building. Theory and practice normally culminate in the planning, researching, design and delivery of a live exhibition in a local museum. The programme is taught in partnership with Hampshire County Council Museum Service, who provide a strong practitioner focus throughout the course. Students also benefit from the School's well-established links with local, regional and national museums. The eight units are delivered in intensive one-week blocks every 4 - 6 weeks, each one followed by independent individual and group assignments and research. Students are required to complete a professional placement of 25 days during the course. Individual units can form part of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme. Applicants may be graduates in a range of subjects including history, fine art, archaeology or heritage conservation and/or possess appropriate professional experience and qualifications. Those already embarked on a career in museums and who wish to study part-time are particularly welcome to apply.
