The main focus is on training for curatorial work through a combination of academic studies, museum visits and practical work. Modules on the Theory and Practice of Museums include Collections in Context and Audiences and Management and provide students with a wide-ranging theoretical base. Visits are made to national, local authority and independent museums and galleries, and to National Trust for Scotland properties, and the course benefits from the input of professionals working in the sector. Full-time students work in teams to organise two exhibitions in St Andrews, taking part in a range of practical activities which are written up as half the project-work portfolio. Part-time students undertake similar interpretation projects within their own workplaces and, like the full-time students, also do an individual project which forms the second part of the portfolio. The part-time course takes two years and involves attendance at four residential schools in St Andrews. Students who wish to take the M.Litt. submit a dissertation after the end of the taught course.
