MA in Museum Studies (FT&PT) MA in Heritage Education and Interpretation Students follow a modular course of 180 units in total. These are acquired from four compulsory modules (80 credits) and more specialised units (20 credits). These taught components are followed by a placement (20 credits) in a museum or gallery and a research period leading to the submission of a 15,000 - 18,000 word dissertation which is equivalent to 60 credits. Students taking the Diploma are required to undertake a placement, but not the dissertation. The first three compulsory modules are Issues and Ideas, Management and Interpretation and Communication. Each of these modules is equivalent to 20 credits and ensures that students obtain a comprehensive vision of the heritage sector, and a better understanding of how their specialised interests fit into the growing cultural arena. After taking these compulsory components students undertake two additional 20 credit modules which may be taken from Archaeology, Art, History, Education, Natural Sciences, Management or Theoretical Museology. The course is distinguished not only by its practical philosophy but also by a commitment to providing a global perspective. There are established cultural links with a variety of heritage organisations, museums and galleries worldwide, and the centre has especially strong relationships with training partners in Europe through the Socrates/Erasmus programmes.
