These courses provide the pre-entry qualification for those wishing to embark upon a career in museums and galleries or, for those who are already working in the sector, an opportunity to further advance their careers and develop new knowledge and skills.

The Masters programmes also provide underpinning knowledge for those who wish to register for a PhD in museum studies.

All programmes:
- offer opportunities for critical engagement with wide ranging museum studies issues and ideas
- are informed by the department's leading edge international research and the work of RCMG (Research Centre for Museums and Galleries)
- are designed to be student-centred - accessible, inclusive and flexible to meet diverse student needs.
- maintain an international perspective and reflect the department's collaborative approach to working within the sector

These programmes stimulate students to engage critically and creatively with wide ranging ideas and issues and to develop both philosophical approaches and the practical methods and skills necessary to become creative and effective museum and gallery professionals.

These interdisciplinary programmes are student-focused and a wide range of learning styles and approaches are catered for.

Art Gallery Studies is available for study full time (one year) campus-based in Leicester. Museum Studies programmes are available for study full time (one year) campus-based in Leicester or part time (over two years) by distance learning.

Students choose the mode of study which best suits their personal circumstances and preferred learning styles.

The Department has been awarded the highest possible score (24/24) for the quality of its teaching and student support by The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education.

The Department is internationally known for the quality of its research and was graded 5 in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise.
