The MA in Gallery Studies is a taught course consisting of seminars, lectures, curatorial practice sessions, tutorials and on site visits. It lasts for twelve months from October until the following September. The course can only be taken full-time; however certain elements may by arrangement with the course director be studied by existing museum staff as part of a wider in-service training programme, or (on a modular basis) by those seeking the award of professional or other vocational qualifications. The most important aspect of the course is the option to make an exhibition or write a dissertation, one of which must be chosen. The exhibition option provides the opportunity for students to curate an exhibition shown in the university gallery during the summer term. The dissertation option involves a workplace placement. The advice of an external consultant helps to ensure that as far as possible, students on placement are assigned to projects that match their individual skills, interests and abilities.
