Council The MA council is the association's governing body. Members come from all parts of of the UK museums community, and are directly elected by the membership. The members of council are directors of a company limited by guarantee and trustees of a charity. Council is responsible to the membership of the association for ensuring that the organisation is administered in a way that complies with all legal, financial and other relevant regulations. It is also responsible to the membership for ensuring that the Association fulfils its aims and objectives. To help it to do this, it has elected officers (a president, two vice-presidents and a treasurer) and a number of committees. The MA council reports back to the membership through its Annual Report and via the Annual General Meeting. Through various voting constituencies it has individual and institutional members from all parts of the UK, and from all types of museums. Council meets three times a year and its agendas, papers and minutes are made available to all members.
Executive committee On major issues, the association's council agrees approaches on policy, but the executive committee, advised by the director, deputy director and policy officer, deals with most day-to-day issues. Policy and public affairs issues range from responding to consultations from government or government agencies, reacting to initiatives, co-ordinating responses and replies, meeting with and lobbying key figures, publishing reports and initiating debates on significant issues and maintaining the profile of museum issues with press, funders and politicians. The executive committee is convened by the president.
Professional development committee The PD and EO committee is there to advise and support the Museums Association's work in the area of professional development and training, and workforce development. The committee oversees and supports the promotion, administration and improvement of the Museums Association's professional development schemes - Associateship (AMA), Fellowship (FMA) and CPD plus. The committee meets three times a year and it is made up of ten members. The members are drawn from across the museum sector. They include members who are participating in the Museums Association's CPD schemes. The committee members have a strong commitment to, and belief in, improving the standards of museum professionals through training and continuous professional development.
Ethics committee The aim of the ethics committee is to create a culture in UK museums that embraces ethical practice so that people working in museums: Recognise responsibility for practising and promoting ethical behaviour See ethics as a positive force, responsive to developing professional and public views, and underpinning change and improvement Regard an awareness and discussion of ethics as the norm, connecting all museums and playing a role in planning and decision making The ethics committee develops and promotes the understanding of ethical principles, practice and issues within the museum community. It prepares and publishes guidance on ethical matters, mainly in the form of ethical guidelines or toolkits. A large part of the committee's work is discussing key ethical issues that arise in the preparation of this guidance and commenting on drafts of publications. The committee also oversees work on the Museums Association's Code of Ethics. The ethics committee is regularly asked to provide confidential advice on specific issues that arise in individual museums. The committee acts as a sounding board and critical friend to promote good ethical practice in the museum community. Occasionally, in difficult cases, a substantial investigation needs to be undertaken and individual ethics committee members help with this if they have appropriate experience or expertise.
Editorial panel The editorial panel acts as a sounding board for the editorial staff of the Museums Association. It provides feedback on the content and design of the magazines and website, suggests ideas for future issues and generally assists the development of the Museums Associations publications.
