Discovering Collections, Discovering Communities 2017 Conference
The National Archives and Research Libraries UK are delighted to announce that registration is now open for this year's Discovering Collections, Discovering Communities (DCDC) Conference – The Cultural Value of Collections and the Creative Economy.
In today’s uncertain political and economic climate the ability to demonstrate why heritage and culture matter – and to whom – has never been more important or relevant. The ways in which we gather, measure and present evidence of cultural value and impact has attracted increasing attention in recent years, as emphasis has led to a stronger focus on the experience of individuals and of communities. #DCDC17 will consider how, by working collaboratively through networks of inter and cross-disciplinary initiatives, archives, libraries, museums and academics can continue to improve and develop methodologies in order to build a strong evidence base to demonstrate the cultural value of collections and their contribution to the creative economy.
There are a number of exciting new features for #DCDC17, including a funders marketplace, a choice of three exciting pre-conference workshops, and an optional networking buddy system (see more below).
Keynotes speakers include:
• Geoffrey Crossick, Distinguished Professor of Humanities, School of Advanced Study, and Director of the AHRC Cultural Value Project: ‘Thinking about the value of culture, thinking about the value of collections’
• Shân Maclennan, Deputy Artistic Director, Southbank Centre: ‘The Telepathy of Archives’
• Mike Jackson, Chief Executive North Somerset Council: ‘Weston after Dismaland – Banksy and Beyond’
• Nancy E. Gwinn, Director of Smithsonian Libraries.

Multiple networking opportunities
There are a number of exciting social and networking opportunities at #DCDC17 to take advantage of. These include:
• Pre-conference reception in the panoramic Compass Room at The Lowry, with commanding views over Salford Quays and Media City
• Conference dinner in the stunning setting of the IWM North
• Informal networking drinks before the conference dinner
• A new optional buddy system to link up delegates
In a new innovation for this year’s conference, #DCDC17 will host a funders marketplace, taking place all day on Tuesday 28 November.
This is a practical event around the funding of collections which brings together funders and professionals from cultural heritage organisations, such as archives, museums and libraries, to discuss prospective funding opportunities and ideas for enhancing and strengthening collections across the country and beyond. More specifically, interested delegates will have the chance to learn about current funding opportunities, pitch their ideas directly to funders and get expert advice in short one-to-one sessions. Through #DCDC17, we hope that these conversations, which started as part of the RLUK Special Collections Programme, will reach a wider audience that could potentially benefit from them.
For the first time at #DCDC17 we are excited to announce an option of three fantastic pre-conference workshops hosted by local heritage organisations:
• Manchester Libraries and Archive Services: ‘Successful partnerships: A practical guide’
• John Rylands Library: ‘Working hard to establish relevance with special collections’
• Imperial War Museums: ‘Difficult Conversations – Creating relevant and responsive public engagement opportunities about past conflict and the contemporary world’
