Event titleNew agendas: engaging with local government (C12)
Details1000-1600

Around one in three museums in England is operated by a local authority. Many are subsumed within large local government departments and have a low profile, divorced from decision-making and struggling to remain valued.

Now a new regime of performance monitoring is being launched within local government. Self-assessment, peer reviews, national indicators and local area agreements are the new ways to measure and monitor effectiveness and success.

How can your museum boost its profile within your local authority and respond to demands? What is the improvement agenda and what does it mean for your museum? Would your museum be better off moving to trust status?

How can your museum position itself to be key in economic generation and tourism? How can independent museums work in partnership with local authorities? How can museums contribute to policy development? Major figures in this landscape will debate how and why museums can be more engaged with their local authority.

Who is it for?

• heads of service, elected members and officers
• managers of local authority and independent museums
• anyone who deals with local government.

What will I learn?

• methods of engagement with your local authority
• what self-assessment and peer-reviews mean for museums
• examples of good practice in the areas of trust status, improvement and partnerships.
