What is Diversify?
Diversify makes museum careers more accessible to people from black and minority-ethnic (BME) communities. Latest figures show that minority-ethnic communities are under-represented in the museum workforce.

Currently just over 4.4% of the sector's workforce is of African, African Caribbean, Asian or Chinese descent. Of these, fewer than 2.5% work with collections. Ethnic minorities account for some 8% of the UK workforce.
We believe that the museum sector's workforce should reflect the local communities that it serves. Diversify aims to address this by facilitating positive action training so that under-represented groups develop skills and experience to compete on an equal basis for jobs in this sector.

Diversify's main funder is the Museums, Libraries & Archives Council as part of the Renaissance initiative. It is also supported by a number of museum, gallery and university partners.

Click here for more information about traineeships
bursaries: funding for a one-year postgraduate course in museum studies with a 3-5 month placement in a museum or gallery
Click here for more information about bursaries
management-level traineeships: a structured placement in a museum full time for 18 months, backed by a tailored package of museum studies and management training (currently a pilot programme)

Diversify began in 1998 and more than 80 people have been, or are currently, involved in the scheme. This exceeds our original target of 50 people by the end of 2006.
To date, 43 people have completed training. Over 80% of those who have completed the Diversify scheme are now working in museums. Several others are involved in further museum-related training or research.
Based on the success of the Diversify scheme, the MLA now requires each of the nine Regional Hubs to host at least one positive action traineeship between 2006-08.
