Bursary student: Jessica Mani
Searching the internet for ways to get a museum job led Jessica Mani to the Diversify programme. Having attempted to break into the sector without success, Jessica decided that a Diversify bursary could be her passport. 'I felt that training would give me a better chance of getting a museum job as I had tried to in the past with no success.'
Jessica's bursary was funded by the University of Southampton and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). It paid for her to take a Masters in Museum Studies at Winchester School of Art. Her studies commenced in September 2004. The funding provided a contribution towards essential course expenditure and a training bursary towards a Diversify placement.
In October 2005, Jessica began her three-month work placement within the exhibitions department of London's Horniman Museum & Gardens. She completed the placement at the beginning of January 2006 and was awarded her Masters in the spring.
After temping for a short time, Jessica secured a job as PA to the project director of the Holocaust exhibition at the Imperial War Museum. She is hoping to use this as a route into museum marketing or events. She comments: 'Diversify got me on the first steps of a museum career.'
