Entry-level traineeships
Traineeships usually offer a fixed, two-year programme of postgraduate study with a placement in a museum or gallery. They are designed to help develop and prepare candidates for professional museum work.
You will spend about half your time studying for a postgraduate museum studies qualification, which has to be completed by the end of the traineeship. The other half of your time will be spent undertaking a properly supervised and supported placement in a museum or gallery.
Trainees are also encouraged to take part in a range networking and professional development opportunities including attendance at MA conferences and events, register for the Associateship of the Museums Association, and have a Diversify mentor from outside the host museum, who has been through the scheme themsleves.
What can you expect?
Funding
Your course fees and related expenses will be paid. Trainees also receive a training bursary which contributes towards living expenses, normally on a par with a part-time salary for a similar museum post.
Supervision
Your museum will make sure supervisors are committed to Diversify and offer adequate and appropriate induction and support.
Supervisors can help you to cope with academic study and gain experience and skills on the job without too much pressure from time-conflicting objectives and tasks.
Team working
Your museum will ensure you are part of a bigger team and not singled out.
Networking
The MA will put you in touch with other participants in the Diversify scheme and give you opportunities to meet up and share experiences.
Positive Action
Diversify is based on the principle of positive action, which means helping people from under-represented minority groups compete on an equal basis for jobs by helping them to develop the necessary skills to do particular work. Positive action does not involve setting quotas, nor does it mean that standards are lowered.
What will you achieve?

What happens when the traineeship finishes?
On completion of the traineeship, you will be encouraged to apply for any suitable vacancies within the sector, but selection will be based on equal opportunity criteria and merit. You are not guaranteed a permanent position at your host museum, because this would constitute positive discrimination.
Over 80% of Diversify participants have found jobs in museums or galleries. Others have secured funding to continue their museum-related studies.
