Positive-action bursaries 2008-09
People from ethnic minorities are underrepresented in the museum and gallery workforce. The Museums Association Diversify scheme offers training opportunities to prepare people of African, Caribbean, Asian or Chinese descent for work in UK museums and galleries.

So far, over 90 individuals from minority-ethnic backgrounds have taken part in the Diversify scheme and have gained greatly from the scheme's training and work experience. The majority of them now enjoy working in full-time permanent jobs in UK museums.

Bursaries 2008-09

With support from Renaissance - the Museums, Libraries & Archives Council's (MLA) regional museums programme, the Museums Association (MA) is delighted to offer:

Three bursaries, which include:

  • Funding for a distance learning masters in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester

  • Funding towards essential course expenditure

  • A five-month placement at either Gallery Oldham, Shibden Hall - Halifax or the Imperial War Museum, North


  • Please note that the bursaries do NOT include day-to-day living, travel and accommodation expenses when you are doing the masters in museum studies - participants will need to fund their living expenses while on the course. The small training allowance is only to cover the five-month placement.

    Application Guidelines

    Who can apply?

    You must meet all four of these criteria:

    · You must be of Black African, Black Caribbean, Asian or Chinese descent
    · You must have, or be expecting to have, either a first or second class honours degree, or an equivalent qualification or experience that will meet the university's admission requirements for postgraduate training
    · You must be eligible for home student university fees (for example be a national of the UK or another EU country, or given indefinite or exceptional leave to remain in the UK)
    · You must be serious about starting a career in museums and galleries in the UK

    How to apply

    · Email us a covering letter and tell us why we should sponsor you for the bursary.
    · Email us your completed application form/s (if you are taking final examinations this year please let us know what class of degree you expect to get).
    · Ensure that you have completed the Equality and Diversify monitoring form at the end of the application form
    · Confirm that you are eligible for 'home' university fees (e.g. because you are a UK or other EU national). Confirmation should be given in your covering letter

    What next

    We'll assess applications in early November and successful applicants will be invited to an interview in mid-late November. Candidates who have not heard by mid-December should assume that their application has been unsuccessful.
