The MA has recognised postgraduate museum studies courses since 1999. Course recognition was designed to demonstrate that: · A course had been validated by CHNTO (Cultural Heritage National Training Organisation) and as such had been formally assessed and met certain standards. · A course had met additional requirements, therefore allowing people who had completed that course to apply directly to undertake the AMA without needing to undertake any additional qualifications. In 2002 CHNTO ceased to exist and this has resulted in long running difficulties for the MA in continuing to recognise courses, as validation provided a strong benchmark on which to base our recognition. Since 2002 the MA has been unable to grant or renew the recognition of any courses, which has been very unsatisfactory (up until that time the MA had recognised over 12 postgraduate museum studies courses). So in light of these and other recent changes the MA will no longer formally recognise postgraduate museum studies courses. How will this affect you? If you are considering taking Route C or D for the AMA the Museums Association will continue to accept registrations from graduates from the recognised course list until September 2009. Why 2009? The Museums Association is currently reviewing the AMA, one of the key aims of the review is to ensure that the AMA is accessible to everyone who works in or for a museum or gallery. There is a growing body of evidence that current entry routes to the AMA are acting as a potential barrier to people entering the scheme. It is therefore likely that the current entry routes will change as a result of the review. Any changes will not come into place until 2009.
