The trainees have gained personally and professionally from the scheme's training and work experience. Over 80% of the 43 people who have completed the Diversify scheme are now working in jobs in UK museums. Others are undertaking further museum-related studies or research. Without Diversify some of these individuals probably would not have entered museum work. Who takes part in Diversify? The trainees who have taken part in Diversify are mainly recent graduates with a degree in anything from archaeology or English, to geography, social policy or law. The scheme requires participants to be of African, African-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese descent as these groups are currently under-represented in the museum's workforce. Click here to find out about diversity in the workforce Diversify offers three distinct options for minority-ethnic trainees to build a career in museums:
Most trainees do a masters course in museum studies at a university; some register with a distance learning masters programme. Some take the course part-time over two years while on a placement at a museum or gallery for 3 or 3.5 days a week. Others take a course full time over one year and have a shorter placement. Why get involved? Trainees who have taken part say the scheme has given them increased confidence, opened doors to new opportunities and allowed them to be taken seriously in the workplace. They value particularly the opportunity to network, the support on offer from the Museums Association and the financial benefits. The Diversify scheme has been recognised as a best practice training method for the museum sector. Former trainees are now working in a number of UK museums, in a wide variety of roles.
